Standard Gibbs Free Energy of Activation

Postby Sylvester_Foley_3G » Tue Mar 07, 2017 12:34 am

Hello,

I was just wondering why the Standard Gibbs Free Energy of Activation is always going to be a positive value?

Thank you in advance,
Sylvester

The standard Gibbs energy difference between the transition state of a reaction and the ground state of the reactants. Because it usually takes energy for the reaction to happen (energy will be used to break the molecular bonds of the reactants), the gibbs free engery of activation will be positive. It is rare for reactants to need a to expend energy for a reaction to occur.

because you need energy for the reaction to happen
