The transition state enthalpy is very similar to the activation energy. Because enthalpy describes heat transferred and heat is a transfer of energy. According to certain collision theories, the transition state enthalpy is in fact the exact SAME thing as activation energy.

As mentioned, I think it has to do with the potential energies of the reactants and products as they undergo reaction.

From my notes: in a transition state, the standard Gibbs free energy of activation is always unfavorable and therefore always positive. Hope this helps!
