Determine which reaction is faster

Postby Chem_Mod » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:49 pm

In a plot of free energy against progress of reaction, how can we determine which rate constant is the fastest if for example, there's one intermediate A -> B -> C.

You will have to look at the activation energy, the bigger the "hump", the harder it is to get to the product, the slower the rate (ie, the smaller the rate constant).

I remember one of the substitutes saying that we should look at the number of bonds breaking to determine which TS will have the higher energy barrier, but what if there are the same amount of bonds breaking in both of them?
