Cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes

Postby 204625955 » Tue Mar 08, 2016 11:06 pm

Understanding that cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes are extremely rare and unstable, where do they exist and why do they form despite the high strain?

Cyclopropane, to name one example, can be found in many structures isolated from the prokaryote Streptoverticillium fervens.

It is formed because the free energy landscape of the complex biological pathways in this organism provided a stable enough route that the synthesis of multiple cyclopropane rings were possible.
