Bond Angles and Energies

Postby AaronChowL1D1I » Fri Mar 11, 2016 11:43 am

Are we required to memorize the bond angles and total strain for cycloalkanes? What exactly should we know about each type of cycloalkane?

I do not think we need to memorize the exact total strain values for the cycloalkanes; we would probably need to know trends within it like which one releases torsional strain or steric strain and which ones are higher. I do think we need to know bond angles however so I would understand/memorize those. It also helps to know them in case we are asked a more concept oriented question on strain so we can use bond angles in the response.
Individually I would know where the strain occurs, different conformations he went over in class, generic energy differences (like the trends and why they occur but not the values), how they look like, and the potential energy graphs. Oh also if they are/are not present in biological systems and why.
