Interconversion of chair cyclohexane

Postby Audrey Kang 2I » Thu Mar 10, 2016 11:22 pm

Why is it that upon collision, the chair cyclohexane converts to the other ring-flip cyclohexane? If both versions of the chair cyclohexane are the same energy, wouldn't it also be possible for the cyclohexane to return to the previous/original version of the chair cyclohexane?

yes, it would be possible. but i think the point is that is CAN switch if it would like to. If i remember correctly, Dr. lavelle stated in lecture that these molecules switch between the two states as they get bumped repeatedly, and I don't think that it would have to switch off every time.
