how do we determine if the molecule is cis or trans for a cyclohexane
and is there always a cis or trans conformation for a cyclohexane with substituents

Hi!

To determine if a cyclohexane has cis or trans, there must be 2 and only 2 substituents in it. After that, if the two substituents both have the same direction (both up or oth down), then it is cis. If the two substituents have opposite directions (one up, one down or one down, one up), then it is trans.

Hope that helps!
