How to tell if substituent is axial or equatorial?

How do we know whether a substituent is attached axially or equatorially to a chair hexane? How do we know whether each is e or A. Also, if something is trans, it can be either e and A, or e and e, or A and A, right?

The substituents must be trans to one another. They switch from equitorial to axial, and vice versa, in the two different chair conformers. Arbitrarily choose one, and then draw the other to match the isomer (trans in this case). Next, draw the other chair, and determine which will be more stable.
