Axial bonds point up/down and are referred to accordingly.
Equatorial bonds only point slightly up/down and are referred to accordingly.
Start with the carbon to carbon bonds. Think of how those are arranged according to the conformations.
For chair conformation of cyclohexane, "each carbon atom has one C-H bond in an axial position, and one C-H bonds in an equatorial position."

when drawing cis and trans on a molecule like that does it matter if you draw off the axial or the equatorial?

In the photo, which bond would be which on the carbon I labeled 3? How would I be able to tell that on a test?
