Orientation of the chair conformation

Postby Abigail_Low_1A » Thu Mar 16, 2017 10:06 am

Does the orientation of the chair conformation matter? For example in hw questions 3.15 & 3.16, does it matter which orientation the chair conformation is as long as I have the largest atoms/molecules in the equatorial position?

If by orientation you mean one of the two "flipped" variations, then no it does not really matter. Just be sure that the larger atom/substituent is in the equatorial position and also that you obey any cis/trans or E/Z designations.
