Steric vs. Torsional

Postby Elle_Bertuccelli_1B » Fri Mar 17, 2017 4:16 pm

What is the difference between steric and torsional strain and how would we identify that when looking at the structure?

When rotating a molecule around a bond, the torsional strain is the repulsion caused by the electrons in between different groups
when they pass by each other. Steric Strain is strain caused by the electrons in between different groups. Steric strain cannot be lessened by rotating the molecule around a bond. Torsional strain can be relieved by bond rotation whereas
steric strain cannot.
