Rapid interconversion of the chair

Postby Nadine Schenker 3E » Fri Mar 17, 2017 8:25 pm

When is interconverting the chair (cyclohexane) necessary/ is it something we should be familiar with doing?

In the course reader, rapid interconversion of chair cyclohexanes are explained by showing that rotating the chair conformation about the C-C single bond gives equal energy. I think this is just used to show that chair conformations are stable. I'm not too sure about other implications of this though.

Yes, it is necessary to know as I have seen questions on the previous final about drawing out chair flips.
