How do you know in which directions to draw the equatorial and axial bonds?

I'm pretty sure the equatorial bonds are always horizontal and axial are vertical, right? Is there anymore to it?

Yep, the axial is always up or down and the equatorial is always 109.5 degrees from the axial bond. In the chair conformation, the top of the chair has an axial up bond and equatorial down, and then from there it alternates axial down and up for all six carbons.

Furthermore, the substituents generally have equatorial (horizontal) bonds while the hydrogens have axial bonds.

When adding substituents in then how do you know from where to begin on the chair conformation?
