Theoretical yield

Postby 105561735 » Sun Dec 10, 2023 10:43 am

Hello,

How do i calculate the theoretical yield and percent yield of a given reaction when 0.40 ml of 2 butanone was reacted with an excess of propyl magnesium bromide to make 0.392 of 3 methyl 3 hexanol.

convert the 0.4 mL into grams using the density of 2-butatone (g/mL) and then convert the grams of 2-butatone into moles using the molar mass. Since this is your limiting reactant, convert the moles of 2-butatone into 3-methyl-3-hexanol (1:1 ratio so same essentially). Then convert the moles back into grams (using molar mass) and then that would be your theoretical yield. calculate percent yield by actual yield/theoretical yield.

I was confused about why theoretical yield and limiting reagents were similar to each other?
