Naming Ionic Compounds and Acids

Postby Toby Harris - Discussion 2E » Tue Oct 24, 2023 9:51 am

Are we going to need to know how to come up with the formula for an ionic compound or acid based on the name of it in a word problem on the midterm? Or will molecular formulas in those cases be given?

Dr. Lavelle said in lecture a while ago that you are only expected to know the names/formulas of basic compounds that we use on a pretty regular basis, such as water. Anything else more complicated should be provided for now.

I'm pretty sure Dr Lavelle said that all molecular formulas will be given for non-well known ionic compounds and acids. He said that water for example may not be given, since it's commonly known, however more complex ones will be given, since he hasn't gone over that and wants to test our understanding of general chemistry and just the application of the formulas.
