Self-Test - Question #4 Summer 2016

Postby ckim_1I » Sun Jun 26, 2016 12:02 pm

339.20 g of Cobalt metal piece is reacted with compressed Fluorine gas to produce a compound with a mass of 996.08 g. What is the empirical formula of the new compound?
Atomic Masses: Co (58.93 g/mol) F (19.00 g/mol)

I don't know where to start with this question.
If someone can advise me on how to approach questions like these, I would be very thankful.

in the final product of a mass 996.08, 339.2 should be cobalt and the rest is fluorine, find moles of each part and then get the ratio of Co with F to determine the empirical formula
