Nitric Acid

One of the homework problems(F3) asks you to write the formula for nitric acid. How do I know derive the formula, and know whether they're asking for the molecular or empirical formula?

Nitric acid corresponds to the nitrate ion making up the acid. If they are asking for nitric acid, it corresponds to a specific molecule, so definitely not empirical formula.
