### Worksheet Problem #4

In a review worksheet posted, problem #4 asks for the molecule that represents: 0.314 mol of a diatomic molecule has a mass of 10.05g. I divided 0.314 mol by the mass of 10.05g and got 32 g/mol.

Don't you somehow have to find the closest atomic mass on the periodic table in order to find out which molecule it is? I know that the homo nuclear diatomic molecules are H2, F2, O2, N2, Br2, Cl2, and I2. None of the atomic masses for these match closely with the atomic mass that I found, but the answer key says it is 02 and I am confused as to why.

How would I determine what diatomic molecule it is?

Remember that there are 2 oxygen atoms in O2. This means that the molar mass of O must be multiplied by 2 in order to get the molar mass of O2. So 16 g/mol of O x 2 is 32 g/mol, which is indeed the molar mass of O2.
