The question is "In a nanotechnology lab you might have the capability to manipulate individual atoms. The atoms on the left are gallium atoms (molar mass 70 g/mol), those on the right are atoms of astatine (molar mass 210 g/mol). How many astatine atoms would the pan on the right have to contain for the masses on the two pans to be equal?"

The answer says 3 atoms of At. What does this answer mean? why is it not 3 atoms of gallium (3 x 70 = 210)?

You have the right reasoning but just the wrong information. There was a figure associated with the question which explains why the answer is 3 At atoms.


Left: 9 Ga (9 x 70 g/mol = 630 g/mol)
Right: 210 g/mol x 3 At = 630 g/mol

Answer: 3 At

So the picture is confusing, but the atoms on the left are gallium and the ones on the right aren’t technically on the pan, which is why it is asking you how many there would need to be in order to equal the mass of the ones on the left .
