How to write empirical/ molecular formulas

Postby Adrienne_4F » Thu Oct 04, 2018 3:39 pm

How do we know what order to write the empirical or molecular formula in?
For example, F17. In the solution manual they wrote Os before C and H. How would we know that?

the general rule, i believe, is that Carbon always goes first, followed by Hydrogen, and then continued by the elements in alphabetical order.

Additionally when you write the formula for a compound with a metal and nonmental, you typically list the metal before the nonmental in the formula

Like the other responses said, carbon is written first, followed by hydrogen, then alphabetic order. This is called the Hill System. I will add that if neither carbon or hydrogen are present then resort to writing the other molecules in alphabet order.
