### Molecular Formula

How do you write the molecular formula for a compound when given the diagram of the molecular structure? (such as in question F.1 in the sixth edition for example)

In that question they tell you that the diagram shown is the molecular structure, so I think you could just count out each of the atoms and that would give you the molecular formula. That one confused me too.

Yeah, since the molecular structure is shown you only have to count the number of molecules for each element to find the molecular formula.

How do you know which order they should go in though?

Because the molecular formula basically tells exactly the amount of atoms that are in each element and not the ratio, then all you have to do is count how many atoms are of each element type and make them your subscript for that element in the molecular formula

### Re: Molecular Formula

The molecular formula tells you how many atoms there are per element, so all you would need to do is count the atoms. You would not be able to do this with the empirical formula though because the empirical formula is a ratio.

All you have to do is count the atoms out for the molecular formula.

### Re: Molecular Formula

If atoms are linked together, they form one compound. Count up each type of atom to form the compounds used in the equation and use them to make a balanced chemical equation.

### Re: Molecular Formula

The molecular formula consists of the exact number of atoms for each element, whereas the empirical formula is the exact ratio of these atoms.
ex) molecular formula: H2O2 & empirical formula: HO (1:1 ratio)

### Re: Molecular Formula

All you have to do is count the number of atoms that the molecule has and the number of atoms is your subscript for the element in the M.F.

I counted the number of atoms that make up the molecule.

so how do I know what order to put the elements in when naming it then?

Yes, all you have to do is count the atoms.
