Compound Names

Postby Briana Perez 3A » Thu Oct 04, 2018 9:29 pm

In a few practice problems there were names of certain compounds listed and we were expected to write them out. For example, 7th edition. Fundamental F #3 "Write the formula for nitric acid"

Are we going to be expected to name the compounds like this for the tests?

I was wondering the same thing, but I think the professor said we won't be having to learn how to name compounds until later in the quarter and that we'll start picking them up anyways as time goes on. This is most likely practice for now.

No we don't need to know them yet but its good practice to figure out the meaning of compound names because they'll be needed in the future

I wasn't sure either but for the learning objectives given to us for the basic chem review he only said know the main elements not how to name the compounds.

Nitric acid is a compound that may be used more as the quarter goes on, it is one of the simpler ones but for many of us we wouldn't be able to solve the problem due to the composition not being given. Nitric acid is HNO3 and I think that it would be wise to memorize this for it is not an uncommon compound.

In some of the homework problems they asked for the formulas of compounds given their names (E7 in particular asks "epsom salts consist of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. Write its formula.) I'm not sure how to do that. Can anyone help?

I think someone asked this in class and the professor essentially said, for now at least, we'll be given the formula's alongside the names and do not need to memorize polyatomic ions.

Yes I have the same problem. Don't know if the naming part would appear on Test 1.

I don't think this will be a key point on Test 1. I can't say for sure, but I feel like he will give us the name of the compounds. Probably for future tests, we will need to know them though.

He said we will need to know once he teaches us to name them, but until then, we will be provided with it
