### Calculation/Finding the Empirical Formula

Definition: it is an educated guess or approximation as to how many elements are within a chemical compound

Steps:
1. If you are given a percentage, make sure to change the percentage into grams.
2. When you find out the grams, convert the grams into moles.
3. After determining the moles of each compound, divide each number by the smallest number of moles.
4. If necessary, multiply to get a whole number.
-if the number ends in (0.5) multiply by 2, (0.33 or 0.66) multiply by 3, and if it ends in (0.25 or 0.75) multiply by 4

### Re: Calculation/Finding the Empirical Formula

It is neither an educated guess nor an approximation- using the method of solving the empirical formula that we found in class, you should be able to find the exact empirical formula. While the numbers may not be exact, they should be relatively close (within a tenth). Since the numbers are within a tenth of the true empirical formula, they can be rounded to such.
