F.3 Chemical Principle 7th edition
(a) Write the formula for nitric acid. (b) Without doing a calculation, estimate which element in nitric acid occurs with the greater mass percentage.

b) Oxygen. Hydrogen is approx 1 amu, nitrogen is approx 14 amu, and oxygen is approx 16 amu. Since there are 3 oxygen, it will have a higher mass percent.

For this question, you'll probably have to have known the formula for nitric acid beforehand.
Nitric acid is one of the seven strong acids.
a. Nitric acid =

H = 1.008 grams/mol
N = 14.01 grams/mol
O = 16.00 grams/mol
you can estimate that O has the greatest mass percentage since it has the highest atomic mass and because there are three atoms of O (16x3=total of 48g) in
