Order of elements in formulas

Postby Nikita Patra 3J » Fri Oct 04, 2019 11:09 am

When given elements in formulas, such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen, how do you know which order the elements should go in? For example, how do you know if it's CHNO or CNOH or something similar?

From my understanding, when looking at elements you order them by C then H, O and lastly N. Not sure if im understanding your question or not. Hope that helps.

Usually you would put Carbon first,Hydrogen second, and then any other elements would go in alphabetical order.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it follows an order outlined by the Hill system. Essentially, an individual most list carbon atoms first, then hydrogen, and finally any other elements are arranged alphabetically.

From what I remember from high school, the order is usually C, H, O, and N. However, I am not entirely sure as well.
