Nomenclature
Are we expected to know the molecular formula of a compound based on just its name. For example, if we're told "magnesium citrate reacts with..." are we supposed to know that magnesium citrate is C6H6MgO7?
Re: Nomenclature
This was posed as a question to my TA during office hours. In general (at least for now), we shouldn't have to worry about any of that. However, some simple compounds (which you could derive from knowing the general ionic charges) you should be able to figure out.

Re: Nomenclature
I agree with the previous person. Maybe in the future we will need to know how to write the molecular formula from it's name and vice versa but I don't think it is something to worry about as of right now.

Re: Nomenclature
I think that as of right now, you shouldn't worry about knowing them but you should know some of the more common or simple ones that are usually used.

Re: Nomenclature
I have the same worry about you because there are just so many compounds in this world to know everything. But I think it's good to know the basic rules of basic compounds. Check the fundamental section D in the textbook. That section helped me so much preparing for the test (even though we ended up not needing to name compounds).

Re: Nomenclature
I'm kinda confused though because in some of the homework problems we are asked to name compounds but we haven't covered that yet.

Re: Nomenclature
Pretty sure we have to know how to do it at some point, but we're not expected to do it right now.

Re: Nomenclature
At this level of chemistry, a lot of the nomenclature will be provided to you in the question. I think as we go further in 14B, we'll need to start learning the actual names, formulas, and groups of molecules we see in questions.

Re: Nomenclature
I don't think we will need to know the formula for a compound so lengthy (and relatively uncommon in textbook material), but I would recommend knowing more common chemical compounds and their respective charges. Here is a quizlet that might be helpful for remembering compounds: https://quizlet.com/418642076/common-ch ... ash-cards/
Hope this helps!

Re: Nomenclature
Basic ones we should be able to figure out, but in general we will be given the molecular formula in questions. Most of the words are just flavor text anyways
Re: Nomenclature
Although we do not have to worry about it, how can you prepare for it and become better at it?
