Molecular Compound

Postby Algernon Jackson 2l » Sun Oct 11, 2020 2:30 pm

Are we supposed to be able to recognize the name of compound from the empirical formula?

My TA told me that's not necessary because the class is more about applying concepts and formulas, but I think it would be good to know the common polyatomic ions!

i think if the compound is something basic (ie just two elements) like NaCl, we should know that it becomes sodium chloride. with hydrocarbons, polyatomic ions, and larger molecules with more elements, i don't think we need to be proficient in naming just yet, but we'll definitely get there soon.

I believe for this class you just need to recognize the common ones but will not be asked to produce the name based on only the empirical formula.
