Periodic Table and Calculations

Postby jordanginyard_ » Mon Oct 19, 2020 12:12 pm

What is a good calculator to use for chemistry? what's a good periodic table because sometimes I get the problems wrong with the numbers that are used on the periodic table?

For the calculator, I use a TI-84, but I've had it for a couple years. I think a good one if you are looking to buy a non-graphing calculator (I heard a lot of chem classes don't let you use graphing) would be the Ti-36x Pro. I was planning on getting that when we go to in person classes. Hope this helps!

I recommend using the sapling periodic table which should be given in the resources for certain problems. For a calculator, any scientific calculator should be fine (e.g. T1-34 scientific calculator). I personally use a graphing TI-84 CE calculator and I really like using it in chemistry. Hope this helps a bit!

Are we able to use graphing calculators for the midterm? I heard some TAs are accepting them but I'm not sure if this is true for every section.

Are we able to use more scratch paper than just the backs of the periodic table and constants worksheet for the midterm?

Concerning calculators, you can use a variety of different ones. I personally use TI-84 CE calculator, but desmos also has a scientific calculator you can use.
On Dr. Lavelle's website, he has a periodic table that you can use.

I am pretty sure if you have a graphing calculator (the TI-84), it is acceptable. My TA said that because the majority of students have that calculator from high school it should be acceptable. But I would definitely ask Lavelle in his office hours tomorrow to make sure it is acceptable and won't be an issue!

Don't plan to use desmos on the test though! the respondus browser won't let you, so have a regular calculator with you instead of a website or your phone.

Hi, just to go off this question where can we find the list of equations/constants that we need for the exam?

Hello Teti, I went on his website and found the pdf there. The title of it is "Constants and Equations."

In terms of calculators, I have been using an app on my phone as a calculator.
Should I purchase a calculator immediately for the midterm? Or will the lockdown browser still allow me to access a website as a calculator?

There isn't a restriction on calculators so you're welcome to use any (recommend: a scientific one) and the professors website provides a periodic table. Hope this was helpful !

I think the most calculator everyone uses is the TI-84.

I have the TI-89 and I really like it! But I also have the TI-84, and it's not my favorite but it gets the job done just as well! I just use a periodic table in a chemistry book. I'm not sure why the numbers you're using would be that off. Hope this helps!

I currently use the ti-84 just because it's the one calculator I'm familiar with! :)

I think any scientific calculator should be okay. As for the periodic table, I go back and forth between the one professor Lavelle gave us and one that I found online that has more info.

I recommend a TI-84 calculator and using the periodic table Lavelle provides for us on his website.

I have a TI-84, it's a pretty good calculator for longer calculations. Also I would recommend using the periodic table he has posted on the chem 14A website, you can't go wrong there.

Honestly, any graphing calculator will do. Scientific is fine and all but graphic calculators are better when dealing with so many calculations in chemistry and large numbers.

I use a graphing calculator and the periodic table from Lavelle's website!

Hello!! I am currently using a TI-84 calculator because it allows me to copy and paste answers using the "Enter" function! It may be difficult to adjust to at first, but using functions is quick and easy! Also, I kinda just looked up a periodic table online and saved it to my bookmarks and constantly used it when reviewing textbook problems. Hope this helps.
