Knowing chemical compounds for midterm

Postby Kaylee Nezwek 1D » Mon Oct 26, 2020 12:48 pm

On the midterm, if we are asked to balance an equation/find the empirical or molecular formula, and the equation contains a compound like "potassium chlorate" or "ammonium nitrate", does anyone know if we are expected to know these, or will their formulas be given?

I asked a similar question, and I was told that we shouldn't have to write formulas like that just from a name. They'll give us the formulas. The ones that you should know are only water, carbon dioxide, etc.

Since we haven't reviewed the specifics in a class of the information you noted, I believe he will give us the information. I would double-check the learning outcome sheet (https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/wp-conten ... _World.pdf) and the equations/constants sheets he provided us. This will help when studying so that you know how to prepare. All of the information is located on his website. Also, in the lectures, he emphasized the fact that he wanted us to apply concepts and avoid brute memorization.
