Nomenclature

Postby Caitlin Beale 3E » Tue Oct 05, 2021 11:30 pm

I believe that Dr. Lavelle said that we don't need to be able to go from the name of a molecule to its molecular formula, instead the molecular formula would always be given. Can anyone confirm this?

While I can't remember from which lecture he said this, Prof. Lavalle did say that he wasn't going to test us on naming the compounds. I believe it was in 1 of the lectures about balancing equations or limiting reactants.

I'm pretty sure he said we would not need to memorize formulas and names other than the very basics (ie. water, carbon dioxide, etc.).

If it is not common knowledge or another basic type of chemical, it will very likely be given.

Thank you for asking this! I was going through the same section and was concerned we had to know how to name a compound based on the formula or be able to get the formula from the name.
