Do we need to know how to write formulas for compounds only knowing their names for Midterm1 ?
In exercise F.3 it asks us to write the formula for nitric acid. I am only able to solve this exercise by looking the formula on the internet, would I need to know how to do this without consulting any material?
Thank you!

Re: Problem of book F.3 - midterm question
I believe Lavelle has mentioned in a lecture that we will not be required to come up with formulas that are not given to us at this point in the course.
However, for textbook work, this thread might be able to help: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=78337

I'm glad that we didn't have to come up with the formulas for the midterm but thank you for sharing the thread! it is certainly helpful for the future

Re: Problem of book F.3 - midterm question
Luckily, this wasn't on the midterm and I don't think we'll be tested on compounds we didn't cover in lecture. Just to be safe, I think it's worth remembering a few polyatomic ions (like phosphate, sulfate, nitrate) just to make solving problems quicker. (But, I expect we'll be frequently encountering them in class anyways!)
