Determining Priority

Postby Tiffany Lin 2E » Wed Mar 09, 2016 4:27 pm

For the 2014 final exam, 7E, why is C(OH)3 drawn 180degrees from CN instead of Cl? Isn't Cl the 'bigger' than C(OH)3 and CH3 in terms of atomic number, so why is it not 180degrees from CN ?

Nope, C(OH)3 is bigger. Add the atomic mass of C(OH)3 and you'll find it's much bigger than Cl. Also, C(OH)3 is really bulky because it's got 3 groups bonded to a central carbon, while Cl is just a single atom.
