How do you know when a chair conformation is cis or trans?

You must examine the substituents and determine whether or not that, if the ring were flattened, they both be on the same side of the ring or on opposite sides.

For example, if the substituents are in the 1,2 positions and one is axial and one is equatorial, they would be cis if the ring were flattened.
