Drawing Newman structures

Postby edith_escalante_3G » Thu Mar 09, 2017 5:21 pm

The course reader states that we should be able to draw Newman structures and visualize molecules from Newman structures. I was wondering what would be the steps or set of rules to follow when it comes to drawing the Newman structures. In addition, how would we be tested on this on the final?

Thank you in advance!

In lecture, Lavelle went over how to draw them. Here are some key things he went over:
1. They are always drawn in the perspective of the carbon chain
2. The carbon in the back is drawn like a circle, with its respective hydrogens coming out of the circle.
3. Make sure you specify whether it is a staggered or eclipsed conformation in your drawing based on the positions of the hydrogens. (pictured in course reader)

He didn't really state how we would be tested on it, but I would know the basics of staggered and eclipsed conformations and their corresponding Newman Structures for the final. Hope this helps!
