Why is the boat conformation unstable?

The boat conformation is unstable for several reasons. Most significantly, it positions the two flagpole groups pointed toward each other, causing a lot of steric and torsional strain.

In addition, the Boat Conformation exists in between the ring flip of the chair conformation. Thus, it wouldn't be stable because it is a transition phase.
