What is Significant about Black Body Radiation?

Postby Rogelio Bazan 1D » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:15 pm

I recall Dr. Lavelle going over Black Body Radiation briefly in lecture and just out of curiosity I wanted to know what Black Bodies are and how do they apply to the development of science? What is so significant about Black Body Radiation?

Thank you,

A black body is defined as an object that absorbs and emits all frequencies of radiation without favor; and the "black-body radiation" is the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a black body.

Hope that helps!

Black body radiation basically absorbs all radiation falling on it, at all wavelengths. As the temperature decreases, the peak of the black-body radiation curve moves to lower intensities and longer wavelengths. It is important because in radiation we use black body radiation at a certain wavelength to determine the maximum energy emitted at that particular wavelength (Planck’s law). Having this information it is now possible to determine the energy emitted by anybody, at that wavelength because we now know the maximum value. Therefore, this will help in developing empirical relations for the energy emitted by various bodies at that wavelength using statistics.
An example would be to be certain of how much a merchant is selling you his products. He states that his 10 apples will round up to 5 pounds, but you won't be certain of the values until you test it yourself. With black body radiation, you would already know the mass and every aspect of that product even before buying it.

Additionally, blackbody radiation is a theoretical concept in quantum mechanics in which a material or substance completely absorbs all frequencies of light and therefore reflects no radiation and appears black. An example would be a star. Most of the light directed at the star is absorbed, capable of absorbing all wavelengths of the electromagnetic radiation and emitting all wavelengths.

Black bodies are hot objects that glow(incandescence) and as the temperature rises and shorter wavelengths. The ultraviolet catastrophe is when energy is transferred in packets(quanta), otherwise there would always be darkness.
