What are blackbodies, what do they do, and when do we use the black body radiation equation?

A black body is a surface or object that absorbs all wavelengths of light/doesn't reflect any light. I believe Dr. Lavelle said that there aren't any objects with true blackbody characteristics, and therefore, we aren't going to learn much about them in this class.

I think the purpose of Dr. Lavelle discussing black bodies in class was just so we know they exist; it is likely a topic that will come up again in succeeding chemistry classes but not 14A. Don't stress :)

it is important to note that blackbodies are only a theoretical idea and no known object absorbs all radiation so any function they may have is theoretical

Adding to the previous points, I think this concept is very much just theoretical, so it is important to know to build off of, but I don't think it will factor into a lot of this class specifically.
