What is black body radiation?

Postby Ivan_Tang_2G » Mon Nov 15, 2021 9:51 pm

What exactly is Black Body radiation? I remember touching on this in class briefly. Will this be something that comes up on the final?

Black body radiation is a type of thermal electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by a blackbody. It surrounds a body that is in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment.

I think one thing I remember about black body radiation that was in the textbook was Wein's Law (temperature in kelvins = 2.9 mm·K. divided by the wavelength of maximum intensity). I don't believe we have to know this for the exam, but I think it's cool that you can find the temperature of a surface of a black body if you know the maximum intensity of radiation it can emit.

i don't think it is very likely that it will come up on the final, anyways, Black-body radiation is the thermal electromagnetic radiation within or surrounding a body in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment, emitted by a black body (an idealized opaque, non-reflective body).

As far as I have grasped, it is a type of thermal electromagnetic radiation coming from a black body's environment.

Black body radiation is basically a type of thermal electromagnetic radiation that surrounds a body that is in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment.

Black-body radiation is the thermal electromagnetic radiation within or surrounding a body. Some examples of black body radiation that emit visible light are electric heaters, night vision equipment, and the sun.

Blackbody radiation refers to the spectrum of light emitted by any heated object. Further, a blackbody is a theoretical or model body that absorbs all radiation falling on it, reflecting/transmitting none.

I think black body radiation was related to one of the quantum concepts we talked about, maybe having something to do with the wavelike properties of particles. I think one of the things discussed was that higher energy does not necessarily mean more radiation, as the human body itself does not necessarily glow at 37 degrees Celsius. Can anyone expand or clarify on this concept?

Will we need to know this on the final?

I don't think we need to know black body radiation because Professor Lavelle went over it very briefly and we didn't need to know it for the midterm.
