Theory Behind Intensity

Postby PranavKetharam » Thu Oct 26, 2023 8:38 am

I recall learning that the square of the amplitude of a wave is proportional to the intensity. Additionally, I recall an achieve question that outlined how amplitude in a wave reveals the amount of energy. However, my question stems from why and how this was identified. What is the reasoning behind squaring the amplitude? Why is the amplitude, alone, a poor measure of intensity? Also, what was the experiment used to prove this?

Hey, when we square the amplitude it affects the energy, and when doing so it quadruples the energy. This is because the wave's energy is proportional to the amplitude. I hope this helps!
