Shrodinger Equation Applications

Postby Jared Smith 1E » Thu Oct 26, 2017 11:52 pm

Two questions in one here, first do we need to know how to use/derive the shrodinger equation for the exam?
Also, I know in class that the professor said that the solutions for the equation are the electron orbitals, is that all the equation is used for?

No we do not need to know how to derive it. Yes that's all we use it for in this class.

I'm also curious as to what the equation can be applied to in real life situations. Can anyone elaborate on that?

The equation is only used for predicting orbital shapes. That is the main real-world application.

Doesn't the Shrodinger equation only apply to particle in a box and certain laws of conservation of energy?

The Schrodinger equation is simplified to apply to the particle in a box type computations, but it can be used to predict orbital shapes for more complicated situations. The conservation of energy factors into the actual computations for the equation. However, most applications for the equation are far beyond the scope of this class.

Hi! I have a question, does the wave function work as a visual representation of what atomic orbitals look like? In other words, do atomic orbitals look like their respective wave functions?

Yes, that is true.
