## Shrodinger Equation

$H_{\psi }=E_{\psi }$

1-D: $E_{TOTAL}\psi (x)=E_{k}\psi (x)+V(x)\psi(x)=-\frac{h^{2}}{8\pi ^{2}m}\frac{d^{2}\psi(x)}{dx^{2}}+V(x)\psi(x)$

### Shrodinger Equation

I understand each of the parts that make up the Shrodinger equation, but I cannot seem to find out how to apply it. What types of problems would you apply this equation to? More specifically, what key words should we look for in problems that involve the use of this equation? What exactly would we use this equation to find? Any help is appreciated!!

### Re: Shrodinger Equation

According to the text book, it’s used to calculate the wave function for any particle and the corresponding energy E

### Re: Shrodinger Equation

To add on, there can be multiple solutions depending on how many orbitals there are.

### Re: Shrodinger Equation

I don't think we will have to directly apply the Shrodinger Equation to any problems in this course.

### Re: Shrodinger Equation

I'm not sure if we have to directly apply the equation to solve for anything but getting a good understanding of the equation is probably a good idea.

### Re: Shrodinger Equation

One finds most use of the Schrodinger equation to all other quantum mechanical objects (bonds, atoms, molecules, orbitals, etc. to name a few). It is noted by $H\Psi =E\Psi$, which is a eigenfunction. In here H would typically contain relevant information about the system (energetics, interaction potentials) and E is the eigenvalue to the possible solution $\Psi$. You are not really expected to apply the equation for this course, but this is used in many fields including simulating/understanding molecular interactions and protein folding to name a few.

### Re: Shrodinger Equation

If we don't have to apply this equation in the class, would we be expected to explain the experiment and how they derived the equation on the midterm?

what kind of questions related to the equation can we expect to see on the midterm?
