Schrodinger's Equation

Postby Saachi_Kotia_4E » Mon Oct 22, 2018 10:55 pm

This is what it says on the list of things we need to know for the upcoming test: Understand the relationship between Schrodinger's equation (H ψ = E ψ), wave functions, and orbitals.

I know we don't need to know any calculations, but what do we need to know about schrodingers equation? Can someone explain how it relates to wave functions and orbitals, and what it even means?

Thanks!

What you need to know about the Schrodinger equation is:
  • It is a fundamental basis for Quantum Mechanics, integrating DeBroigle's concepts and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Some describe it as the "Newton's Laws" of Quantum Mechanics
  • The wavefunction, , helps us predict an electron's position in space relative to time ( is interpreted as a probability distribution for finding electrons at particular points in space and time).
  • Certain wavefunctions function as valid mathematical models (confirmed experimentally/conceptually) that give us the shape of orbitals.
  • The full equation, H ψ = E ψ allows us to calculate the energy levels in an atom, producing results that match those of Rydberg's equation.

You should also know that it changes a probability into an observable value

I know we have not needed to yet, but will we need to be able to apply Schrodinger's Equation on the midterm exam?

We won't need to use the equation in a calculation, but make sure you understand it's concept and purpose because anything is fair game for the midterm.

You should also know the relationship between wave function and probability density (wavefunction^2).

I didn't understand this concept at all so thanks for explaining it to me better!
