Balmer and Lyman Series

How do we know that the Balmer series starts at n=2 and how the n= is found for the lyman series and what that ultimately means. Does this change how the other orbitals are calculated?

I think it was experimentally found that the lowest level of the Balmer series is n=2 and the lowest level of the Lyman series is n=1. This just means that if the electron drops to that level then it is in that series. In calculations, it is the lowest possible level that an electron can drop to if it is in that series.
