Electron configuration

why are chromium and copper the only two elements for which the electron configuration is modified, why aren't other elements in he same position but in the rows beneath the named elements display the same electron configuration?

Hi Rohan,

There are other exceptions to the electron configuration such as silver but I believe Professor Lavelle said we are only responsible for chromium and copper

Chromium and Copper can obtain a more stable electron configuration when they take an electron from the 4s and add it to 3d. When it does this, it becomes either a half-filled shell (Cr) or a full one (Cu). This results in a more stable compound with lower energy. Half-filled shells and full shells are preferred to any "unfilled" shells. For chromium, taking an electron from the 4s and adding it to 3d yields two "half-filled shells." For copper, doing the same thing yields one "half-filled shell" and one "filled shell." The elements below chromium and copper actually do display a similar form in terms of electron configuration for the same reasons chromium and copper have their electron configurations.
