Electron Density

Postby Talia Leano 2H » Fri Nov 06, 2020 8:14 pm

What is electron density and how are nodal planes related to this concept?

Electron density is just the probability of an electron being present.

The electron density or the probability of finding electrons in a nodal plane is zero.

Adding on to the previous answer, electron density can be solved for by the square of Schrodinger's wave equation and is represented by the s-, p-, d-, and f- orbital shapes. Another thing to note is that since the s- orbital is spherical, it has a symmetric electron density and no nodal plane.

Chi squared represents the probability of finding e-, and nodal planes are the possible locations for an e-.

Hope this helps!
