Importance of Schrodinger Equation

Postby 105618850 » Sun Nov 22, 2020 10:00 pm

What is the importance of Schrodinger Equation in chemistry? In what instances would we need to know the probability of an electron's location. Does it relate to any other topics in chemistry?

The Schrodinger's equation essentially is used to explain the wave functions of electrons. It's REALLY important in almost all of chemistry, since it is the equation that lets us know of the existence of orbitals and what orbital each electron has the property of, and orbitals in turn are the basis for a lot of how bonding works. You would only really need to know the specific location of the electron when you are working with quantum physics, so for the purposes of this class just knowing the orbital state that the electron is in is fine.
