Calculation Regarding Shrodinger's Equation
What exactly do we need to know about Schrodinger's equation? Do we need to learn how to use the equation to calculate? Or we just need to know the square of wave function is related to the probability of finding e-?
Re: Calculation Regarding Shrodinger's Equation
I remember during lecture Professor Lavelle stated that we do not need to know how to calculate using this equation. It was just used to explain how the orbital "shapes" were derived. So I guess what you said about understanding how the square of the wave function represents the the probability of finding an electron.

Re: Calculation Regarding Shrodinger's Equation
Hi, we won't actually calculate anything with it in this class, but it shown to us as a way to understand how the orbitals are gotten and why they are shaped liked that.

Re: Calculation Regarding Shrodinger's Equation
All you really need to know is that conceptually, the Shrodinger's Equation is meant to describe the wave nature of particles like electrons and photons and that the square of this function for an electron gives us the different orbitals. These orbitals allow us to predict where electrons of specific energy states will be found and allows us to ascertain electron configuration for future reference in atom bonding.
