Schrodinger and Orbitals

Postby Alison Le 2E » Tue Oct 19, 2021 11:04 pm

Hi! What is the relationship between Schrodinger's equation and orbitals? Thank you!

In Schrodinger's Wave Function Equation, it states that is the height of a wave and is the probability of finding an electron in a given spot from the nucleus. Because Schrodinger's equation show the probably of where an electron will be, it can give the electron density distribution. It is these distributions from which the orbitals are derived from. The distributions show the different orbitals and what shape they are.

Hope this helps!

Also the quantum numbers are the results for schrodinger's equation. Schrodinger's equation is used to calculate the location of a electron in a certain orbital. The quantum numbers define which electron you are looking for.

the schrodinger equation shows us the wave function and relationship of energies. when this wave function is graphed, it shows the general shape of the orbital (s,p,d and/or f).
