Purpose

Postby Juanalv326 » Sat Dec 09, 2017 10:27 pm

What is the purpose of the particles in a box? The equation seems very confusing, but is it essential to understand the fundamentals of it for future references?

Great question! Particle in a box model is able to provide a simple solution to the Schrodinger equation. Here the assumption is that your potential has infinitely high walls and your particle is "trapped" in it. This particular model can explain energy quantization! The mathematical calculations for small conjugated molecules match very well the experimental results. Please note however that the "particle in a box" model is only one of the MANY models that we can use in quantum mechanics to solve for energies.

It relates to the Schrodiner equation. It's simply a model that explain energy quantization and the mathematical calculations that are involved. It is one of the many models used to explain and solve for values of energy.

The particle in a box model explains energy quantization.

so when would we use the particle in the box?
