is the change in energy of a hydrogen atom positive or negative when it absorbs a photon?

I believe that the energy is positive since when a Hydrogen atom absorbs a photon, its electron achieves a higher energy state.

Another way to think about it is that when an atom absorbs a photon, the change in energy is positive because the electron absorbs the energy that the photon was carrying. This causes it to become excited to a higher energy state.

It's usually a partial positive.

When a hydrogen absorbs, the energy is positive because it is adding it to the molecule, requiring energy.

When it absorbs a hydrogen atom, then it absorbs energy so the energy change is positive meaning it gained energy.

The energy is positive since, the hydrogen atom absorbs energy.
